This article teaches you how to connect your SmartBarrel device to WiFi.

How to Connect Your SmartBarrel Device to WiFi

Overview

The SmartBarrel device supports an easy self-service method to connect to a WiFi network using a QR code. This feature allows you to generate a QR code from the dashboard and scan it with the device for quick setup.

Requirements

Before proceeding, ensure the following requirements are met:

  • Feature Enablement: The WiFi QR code feature must be enabled at the company level by an administrator
  • Device Firmware: Your SmartBarrel device must be running firmware version 3.1.1 or later.
  • WiFi Network: The network must be password-secured using WPA PSK (works with standard WiFi and mobile hotspots).

Step 1: Generate the WiFi QR Code

  1. Log in to the Dashboard: Access your SmartBarrel dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Devices: Click on the Devices page from the left sidebar.
  3. Generate QR Code:
    • Click the WiFi QR Code button in the upper right corner.
    • Enter the WiFi SSID (network name) and password in the pop-up window.
    • Click Generate QR Code.
  4. Save the QR Code:
    • Click Download to save it and send it to your phone/tablet via email, text, or AirDrop.
    • Take a picture of the QR code displayed on your computer screen.
    • Print the QR code for easy scanning.

Step 2: Scan the QR Code with the Device

  1. Put the Device in QR Code Reading Mode:
    • Enter Admin Code 0713 when the device is in normal idle mode (Enter Phone # screen).
    • OR power cycle the device. If it fails to connect to the internet for 5 minutes, it will automatically enter QR reading mode for 2 minutes.
  2. Scan the QR Code:
    • The device will display Scan WiFi Code and flash yellow lights.
    • Hold the QR code up to the device’s camera.
    • If using a phone screen, position it about 3 inches away, centered.
    • Zoom in so the QR code fills the phone screen for better recognition.
  3. Successful Scan Confirmation:
    • The device will flash green and show a success message.
    • The device will attempt to connect to the WiFi network when it is in range.

Step 3: Verify WiFi Connection

  1. Use Admin Code 0704 to check the connection status.
    • If connected, you will see a WiFi IP address (e.g., w: 192.168.1.1).
  2. Use Admin Code 0308 to test the speed of the wifi connection

Additional Notes

  • To clear WiFi credentials, use Admin Code 0714.
  • The device does not need to be in range when scanning the QR code; it will store the credentials and connect when available.
  • Privacy & Security:
    • The QR code is generated locally in your browser and never stored or transmitted.
    • WiFi credentials are encrypted before encoding into the QR code.
    • Only devices assigned to your company can decrypt and use the QR code.
