How do you set a custom file name when downloading a report?

You can choose your own file name when downloading a report, which makes it easier to keep exports organized or match a naming format your payroll or accounting system expects.

Turn on Manual Filenames

  1. Open the report you want to download.
  2. Turn on the Manual Filenames option.
  3. Enter the file name you want to use.
  4. Download the report.

If Manual Filenames is off, the report downloads with its default file name.

Which report formats does this work with?

Custom file names work across report formats, including CSV, Excel, PDF, TXT, and XML.

Good to know

  • SmartBarrel keeps its own record of each report behind the scenes, so custom names will not create duplicates or affect your report history.
  • For PDF and TXT reports, entering a custom file name opens the report in a new browser tab so you can save it with that name. Without a custom name, it downloads directly.
  • If you leave Manual Filenames ON and leave the Filename blank, you will be prompted to save the Filename in your next download.
